Who Was Thomas Delguidce?

North Olean History - Who was Thomas Delguidce

WHO WAS THOMAS DELGUIDCE

Thomas Midgie" Delguidce, was a bootlegger who operated a restaurant at Limestone with a partner by the name of Frank Fidele of Bradford. It was outside of this restaurant on a Sunday night in 1925 when Fidele was killed while sitting in his auto, three bullets making their mark, one entering the left eye. Witnesses said that a large red touring car, with New York State license, was seen heading toward Seneca Junction, but no trace of the car or killers was ever found. Sheriff Knight stated after making an investigation that Fidele held a position of some power and authority in the underworld of Olean as well as in Bradford and vicinity.

A month later after Delguidces place was raided, he was fined $100 after admitting to possession of beer. Not only did he pay his fine, but also the fines totaling $220 that had been imposed on those caught in the raid.

Delguidce was indicted for the murder of Joseph Scutella and after he was found not guilty, he returned to Limestone. One night in August of 1928, two cars bearing New York license plates swooped into the sleeping town, surrounding the home of Delguidce and let loose with a fusillade of shots. Twelve shots were fired into the front and back of the building. Midgie was not at home; his wife was badly frightened but not harmed.

Once again Delguidce was picked up. This time he was being held on suspicion of shooting Joe Barber as he entered his home in Bradford in August of 1930. Mrs. Barber identified the shooters as Midgie Delguidce and Tony Mussari. Barber did recover from his six wounds in a hospital at Punsutawney, Pa.

The last information I have on Delguidce is that he was sentenced to six months in the McKean County Jail for his liquor activities during prohibition in September of 1937. This was during a big sweep when forty-five men and women from Olean, Rochester and Bradford were tried in the Federal Court at Erie, Pa.
